What is the history of the nativity scene?
The Christmas crib has a centuries-long development process behind it. Already in the first centuries after Christ's birth, representations of the birth of Jesus appeared in Christian churches on Christmas Day, which spread all over Europe from the 10th century onwards. The heyday of the nativity scene was the Baroque period: Jesuits built nativity scenes after the Reformation and used them for devotion and prayer. In the 18th century, nativity scenes were banned, so they were carved in the farmhouses themselves. Rustic nativity scenes with mountain landscapes were fashionable until the first half of the 19th century. After that, the oriental nativity scene found more and more followers. Today, the Christmas cot is a cherished tradition in most families as a way of recreating the birth of Jesus in modern times. There is a wide range of styles to choose from, whether it's an Alpine, oriental or modern nativity scene – choose the one that best fits your home and pleases you and your family.

Modern cribs - incomplete without figures
Like the nativity scene itself, the figures of the modern nativity scene convince by their simplicity. If you don't like it very detailed, but rather calmly kept, you will immediately fall in love with our modern nativity figures. These are made of light wood and are faceless or the eyes are only slightly indicated. Other figures, on the other hand, stand out due to their extravagant colouring. We offer the nativity figures of the modern nativity scene for sale in natural, multi-tone stained, coloured or painted with watercolours. The lively structure of the wood comes into its own wonderfully in all variations.
If you do not want to assemble the cot and figures yourself, we already have ready-made cot sets in various designs in our range. You choose which colour you like best or whether you prefer to buy the figures in their natural state.
Tip: Even if you have a modern nativity scene, you can combine the figures with oriental nativity scene figures or Alpine nativity scene figures to create a charming effect.
You can find more information on the "correct" placement of the nativity figures,, on the ox and donkey at the nativity scene and on the history of the Three Wise Kings in our magazine.
