How are our Alpine nativity scenes created?
We carve most of our alpine nativity scenes and the accompanying nativity figures ourselves in our own woodcarving workshop with craftsmanship and great attention to detail. In order to be able to offer you a variety of Alpine-style nativity scenes, we also work with partner workshops in Val Gardena in South Tyrol. For the construction of the Alpine Christmas cribs, we use only the best woods from local forests, from which we create unique one-offs thanks to our many years of experience. Your advantage: You receive a high-quality wooden nativity scene long-lasting for many generations, for your family.
What kind of wood should the Alpine nativity scene be carved from?
If you choose a natural nativity scene, the choice of wood determines the appearance of your nativity scene. This is because every wood has a characteristic colouring. Our recommendation is: Ideally, choose a cot that harmonises in style and colour with your interior. But a contrast can also be exciting and provide variety.
Depending on your personal preference, you can choose from the following types of wood:
- Lime wood (yellowish),
- Swiss stone pine (reddish): In our shop you will find three cots carved from Swiss stone pine in a rustic style: the Fir Tree pine nativity scene, die Rives pine nativity scene and the South Tyrol pine nativity scene.
- Maple wood.
Which alpine nativity scene is the right one for me and my family?
We offer our wooden Alpine nativity scenes in a variety of styles. Which carved work of art you ultimately choose depends on your taste. Are you a fan of simple shapes or detailed cots? How much space do you have at home to set up the nativity scene?
We offer our home nativity scenes in different sizes - from 8 to 60 cm and larger. A small nativity scene can be placed on the window sill in the living room, for example, while a larger nativity scene can be placed under the Christmas tree or on the sideboard.
In our crib guide you will find valuable tips on the right size of cribs and figures and information on colours and types of cribs.
What makes the Alpine nativity scene so special?
Nativity scene making has a long tradition in the Alpine culture, which stands for cosiness and a sense of home. Artful Alpine cribs have been handmade in southern Germany, Austria and South Tyrol for more than 200 years. Since the nativity scene builders did not know what it would actually look like in the place where Jesus was born, they simply transferred the miracle of Jesus' birth to their own homeland. In this way, the Christmas story is not just a distant event as in the oriental nativity scene, but can be experienced at first hand. The nativity figures move in familiar surroundings and wear the usual regional clothing and traditional costume; the nativity stables are reminiscent of a mountain hut or an alpine pasture in the Alps.
Looking at the cot and its figures, believers find peace and distance from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. This is why the Alpine nativity scene is becoming increasingly popular among nativity scene lovers - and not only in the Alpine countries.

What can be done with the Alpine cot after the Christmas season?
From the beginning of Advent until the Feast of Candlemas, the crib decorates the living room. Normally, at the end of the Christmas season, it is put back in the cupboard or in the attic. Not so with the Alpine cot, which is a true all-rounder.
You can easily transform it into a farm by, for example, adding farm accessories such as wood piles etc. to the cot stable or adding animals such as pigs, chickens, ducks. A bench for a rest after the work is done should not be missing either. This way, you have a decorative piece of jewellery in your living room for relaxed contemplation all year round.
The heart of the native nativity scene - the nativity figures
What would an Alpine nativity scene be without the corresponding Alpine nativity figures? In our online shop we offer you a large selection of individual wooden figures in peasant style and in various colourings and sizes. Assemble your wooden Alpine nativity scene according to your personal taste or add new figures to your nativity stable over time. In many families, a precious home nativity scene is a family heirloom that is passed on to subsequent generations.
Any questions? We are happy to be there for you!
